Discussion Questions

1. Today we are in the third week of a Sermon Series called “Parables.” Jesus often taught

using parables, these short dense stories that are packed with meaning. Between Palm

Sunday and Good Friday, in the last week of His earthly ministry, Jesus told six

parables. The third one is a parable about a wedding. Read it for yourself, Matthew 22:1-

14. What stands out to you as you read?

2. Jesus tells a story about a wedding. A king is throwing a great wedding celebration for

his son and invites all the royal and important people of his kingdom. But in a shocking

turn all of the people he invites refuse to come, some go so far as to kill the king's

messengers. This is an unbelievable insult to the king and is treated as such. Jesus is

telling a parable, who do you think these people who reject the invitation represent?

3. The king now does something shocking; he sends his messengers to gather anyone and

everyone willing to come to the wedding celebration. This includes the undeserving and

unworthy. Soon the wedding hall is filled with these undeserving guests who respond to

the gracious invitation. Who are these undeserving guests that Jesus is talking about?

4. Now the wedding banquet has started but one who the king calls “friend” is there but not

wearing wedding clothes. The implication is that he has wedding clothes but doesn’t

have them on. Who does this man represent? For a hint, look at what Jesus calls the

man in Matthew chapter 26:47-50.
